Valcour and Crab Islands
This is the site of one of the first major naval battles of the Revolutionary War. The American forces, led by Benedict Arnold, used Valcour Island as a cover from the British until they had the up-wind advantage. After six hours of battle, the British, under General Sir Guy Carleton, overcame. The Americans were only able to escape thanks to the cover of a foggy night. Despite the American loss at Valcour, this battle was significant as it prevented the southerly advance of the British for the winter, allowing precious preparation time for the American forces.
