CATS Trails Map

Champlain Area Trails offers several events throughout the year- guided hikes, snowshoes and cross country skiing, volunteer projects, and friend-raisers. We've led several European-style Hamlet to Hamlet events, linking local towns and businesses via scenic footpaths and country roads. Other past activities include Full Moon Owl Prowls, Wildflower Hikes, Mushroom Foraging and Bridge Building.

Highlights of Recent Accomplishments

Our director, Chris Maron was honored in 2014 with the New York Outdoor Education Association's Environmental Impact Award. Previous winners are Pete Seeger and Robert Kennedy Junior. In 2013 we were awarded the Wild Stewardship Award from the Adirondack Wild: Friends of the Forest Preserve. In 2012 CATS received the Destination Marketing award from the Lake Placid Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism and the Civic Improvement Commendation from the Essex chapter of the Garden Club of America.

Organization Mission

Champlain Area Trails (CATS) is a non-profit organization, begun in 2009, which creates and maintains hiking and cross-country ski trails in New York's Champlain Valley that link communities, connect people with nature, and promote economic vitality. In its short history, CATS has developed forty miles of trails and made great progress toward the goal of a 30-mile trail loop between Westport and Essex. CATS will extend its trails to neighboring towns and eventually connect them to trails in the Adirondack Mountains, Vermont, and Quebec.

The Champlain Valley is a beautiful landscape of farms, forests, low mountains, charming hamlets, and breathtaking views. Unfortunately, the Valley has little public land and few hiking trails which combine to limit the economic benefits and pleasures of outdoor recreation. CATS is addressing this problem by developing trails, conserving land, and promoting tourism, local farms, and businesses.
