Homer Dodge Martin painted the scene of a mining operation near Port Henry, titled The Iron Mine. In Patricia Mandel’s dissertation on Martin, she identified the mine as Cragg or Craig Harbor, located on the west shore of Lake Champlain slightly north of the center of the modern village of Port Henry. Mandel suggested that the painting may have been commissioned by Benjamin T. Reed of the Bay State Iron Company, which owned the mine at the time.
